The Violence We Do To Ourselves: Self-destruction as Monster
Thom Yorke once said "You do it to yourself, and that's what really hurts."" Psychological horror has always had to walk a fine line between examination and exploitation (and let's be honest, most of the time they fall right off the edge), but it never stops being true that the worst of the worst of what can be done to us comes from within. As a subsection of "monster as metaphor" theory, we take a look at the movies who use our own darkest inner critics against us, and what's left of us when they're finished. Conversation will most likely include difficult topics including but not limited to: self harm, suicide, depression, sexual assault, mental illness.
